Subject: | Preventing Non-Compliant Megan's Law Offenders from receiving Welfare Benefits |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that will prevent convicted sex offenders, who are required to register under Megan’s law, and who are non-compliant in their registry requirements, from receiving welfare benefits. During my time as a United States Marshal, our agency was tasked with conducting Megan’s Law compliance checks. We found that there is an alarmingly high percentage of these violators, who continue to receive benefits while out of court-ordered compliance. The purpose of this bill is to make full compliance under Megan’s Law a requirement for convicted offenders to receive welfare benefits. It is my belief that this legislation provides motivation for compliance and as a result protects our children and our community. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation. |
