Subject: | Public Employees Retirement - Disability (Former House Bill 2273 of 2013-14) |
In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation that will allow certain public employees in Allegheny County to retire early in the event of permanent mental or physical disability. Each day, police officers and firefighters in Allegheny County put their lives in danger in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. With that risk comes the very real possibility that they may become permanently mentally or physically disabled as a result of an injury sustained in the line of duty. Regardless, these men and women serve the public proudly and without mental reservation or hesitation. Unfortunately, current Commonwealth law, the Second Class County Code, does not provide financial protections should these public servants be injured on the job and unable to continue their employment. My legislation amends the Second Class County Code to provide police officers, firefighters, county detectives, sheriffs and deputy sheriffs with a retirement allowance and service increment should they suffer a disability in the line of duty. With the risk of one’s livelihood should come a guarantee of a reasonably comfortable life should a tragedy occur. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
