Subject: Veterans Record Your Discharge Day

On Friday, October 10, 2014, I will be introducing a resolution designating November 3, 2014 as “Veterans Record Your Discharge Day” in Pennsylvania.

The aim of “Veterans Record Your Discharge Day” is to encourage all veterans and their families to record a veteran’s release or discharge documents with their respective county Recorder of Deeds office or an equivalent office. The use of the Recorder of Deeds office or its equivalent is beneficial to veterans and their families because the service is free, will assist in the protection against identity theft, and ensure that veteran’s release or discharge documents can be retrieved at a later date quickly and conveniently. In addition, copies of the documents can be provided to veterans and their families when the original documents become lost or damaged.

Oftentimes, veterans are required to provide certified copies of their release or discharge documents to obtain various State and Federal benefits, to use for wills and estate purposes as well as certain employment purposes. In each of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania there are Recorder of Deeds offices or its equivalent, which house original military release or discharge documents for the protection, preservation, and reproduction of one of the most important documents a veteran will receive after their service to this great country. Please join me in recognizing the valuable service our veterans have given to this country by preserving each release or discharge document as a permanent record and reminder.

Thank you for your support!
