MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 4, 2014 02:50 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Elimination of Legislative License Plates

I am planning to introduce legislation that will amend the Vehicle Code to eliminate "legislative plates." These are license plates that are available to all legislators in the General Assembly or United States Congress during their tenure in office or after retirement.

These "legislative plates" offer no special privileges to the vehicle owner, nor do they have any official purpose. Although the plates offer no special benefits, the appearance of impropriety could still exist with citizens who believe these legislators may receive preferential treatment.

In order to continue the proud tradition of the lawmaker who is a citizen first and reinforce the idea of elected office as a public service not entitled to any special benefits, whether perceived or real, I have drafted this legislation. I appreciate your consideration and support.

Introduced as HB2344
