Subject: | Nuclear Fee Increase legislation |
As you know, nuclear power generation is among the most efficient, affordable, and cleanest method of producing electricity. And in 2007, we passed Act 31, giving DEP the authority to, among other things, charge nuclear power plants a fee to protect the public safety of those living and working around them. This law also provides that any change in fees requires legislative amendment. A recent DEP financial assessment indicates that a $100k per year fee, per site increase is now necessary as all carry-over funds will be expended by fall, 2016, and expenses will exceed Nuclear Power Plant fee revenue. Pennsylvania’s nuclear operators understand this important issue and have agreed in support of an increase from $550k to $650k annually, effective July 1st 2015. Accordingly, in the near future I plan to introduce legislation to effectuate the necessary fee amendment. |
