MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 6, 2014 10:12 AM
From: Representative James R. Roebuck, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: Advanced Placement Articulation

As part of a two bill package, I will be introducing legislation to expand the Transfer and Articulation Program to include credits for matriculating freshmen who have taken Advanced Placement (AP) exams in high school with scores that qualify them for college course credits. This legislation will ensure that high school students who have taken Advanced Placement courses and obtained a score of 3 or more on the AP exam will receive college course credit from Pennsylvania public institutions of higher education including the PASSHE universities and community colleges. Through this program college students and parents will have some alleviation of financial burden on college tuition by eliminating the need to pay for duplicate courses.

This legislation will incentivize students to take the AP exams as well as to further challenge themselves to gain credit toward college courses. The awarding of these credits will save these students and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition costs and lead more students graduating from college in four years. It will also increase the academic rigor in our schools for our students while improving the quality of those teachers who will be teaching AP courses.

Thank you in advance for your support.
