Subject: Resolution Honoring the Holme Circle Civic Association and the Flagpole Dedication Ceremony Memorializing Former Surveyor General Thomas Holme

In the near future I will be introducing a resolution in honor of the Holme Circle Civic Association (HCCA) and their flagpole dedication ceremony to memorialize Thomas Holme, former Surveyor General of Pennsylvania. Established in 2008, HCCA has dedicated its organization to promoting civic involvement, volunteerism, and a sense of community in the Holme Circle neighborhood of Philadelphia, which was named in honor of former Surveyor General Holme.

Appointed by William Penn, former Surveyor General Holme was tasked with drafting the original plan for the establishment of the City of Philadelphia. Former Surveyor General Holme not only established Philadelphia’s original boundaries, but also developed the first plan for the city’s streets. According to Smithsonian Institution historian Silvio A. Bedini, Holme’s plan for Philadelphia was the first urban development plan penned in what would become the United States.

Serving as former Surveyor General Holme’s final resting place, the historic Holme-Crispin Cemetery has recently undergone a revitalization spearheaded by HCCA. It is here that HCCA will be memorializing former Surveyor General Holme and his contributions to the City of Philadelphia in a flagpole dedication ceremony on November 3, 2013, the 389th anniversary of his birth.

I urge you to join me in honoring the efforts of HCCA and the work of former Surveyor General Holme by cosponsoring this resolution.
