| Again it is time to get behind National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW) from October 20 through October 26, 2013 which is dedicated to raising awareness and seeking solutions to unnecessary teen deaths on the road. Let us come together and focus Pennsylvania's attention once again on this serious issue. The theme for this year, "IT TAKES TWO: SHARED EXPECTATIONS FOR TEENS AND PARENTS FOR DRIVING," suggests that teens and parents should work together to help teens become safe skilled drivers. A recent study by Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) found that 75% of serious teen crashes were due to a critical driver error, with three common errors accounting for nearly half of all serious crashes: driving too fast for conditions, being distracted, and failing to detect a hazard. Parents need to teach their teens critical driving skills in order to prevent these serious accidents. These include understanding speed management, recognizing and avoiding distractions, and scanning for hazards. In 2011 nationally, almost 3150 total deaths occurred with teen drivers age 15 to 19 behind the wheel. All were young people loved by their families – good kids full of dreams and hopes for long, meaningful lives. We all know of too many teen crashes resulting in death that have occurred in our own legislative districts. Through this resolution we can recognize “National Teen Driver Safety Week” and encourage the people of Pennsylvania to engage and empower licensed teen drivers in the Commonwealth to become safe skilled drivers.
