Subject: | Increased Penalties for Driving with a Suspended/Revoked License |
In recent conversations with a magisterial district judge, I have learned that the recidivism of driving with a suspended or revoked license is quite high, and the current sentencing structure is unsuccessful in deterring offenders from repeating this type of offense in the future. For this reason, I will be introducing legislation to amend Title 75 in order to increase the penalties for driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked. Under current law, a person who commits the offense of driving with a suspended or revoked license a sixth or subsequent time shall only be sentenced to pay a fine of no less than $1,000, and to a period of imprisonment of not less than 30 days but no more than six months. My legislation will increase the sentence when a person is convicted of a tenth or subsequent offense of driving while operating privileges are suspended or revoked to a fine no less than $2,500, and to a period of imprisonment of not less than six months. I hope you will consider joining me in support of this important legislation. |
