RE: Resolution designating March 2013 as Deep Vein Thrombosis (Blood Clot) Awareness Month

______________________________________________________________________________

At the request of a constituent, I will soon introduce a resolution designating the month of March 2013 as “Deep Vein Thrombosis (Blood Clot) Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

As you may know, deep vein thrombosis is a serious but preventable medical condition where a blood clot forms in a large vein, possibly resulting in a fatal pulmonary embolism where the blood clot breaks off from the vein and travels to the lungs. Complications from deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms take up to 300,000 American lives each year, which is more than breast cancer and AIDS combined.

Fatal pulmonary embolism may be the most common preventable cause of hospital death in the United States, yet a survey conducted several years ago by the American Public Health Association revealed that 74% of Americans were unaware of this condition. My resolution seeks to use March as a month to educate the public on the importance of recognizing and treating this ailment in a timely manner.
