MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 1, 2013 11:52 AM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Mandatory Physical Education in Schools (Former HB 1201)

In the near future, I plan to re-introduce House Bill 1201, Printer’s Number 1312 of the 2011-2012 legislative session.

My legislation amends the Public School Code of 1949 to provide for mandatory physical education for students. Specifically, elementary school students in kindergarten through fifth grade must receive one hundred fifty (150) minutes of physical education instruction weekly. Students in sixth through eighth grade must receive an increased amount of two hundred twenty-five (225) minutes of physical education instruction each week.

Physical education among children is a link to good health for the rest of their lives. Without physical education, children become susceptible to childhood obesity and many diseases like chronic heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, students who participate in physical activities are able to build self-confidence, as well as develop skills in cooperation, teamwork and sportsmanship, all of which will continue to serve students throughout their lives.

If you would like to join me in providing our students with physical education that can lead to improved health and physical fitness please consider co-sponsoring this legislation.
