MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 13, 2012 01:41 PM
From: Representative Anthony M. DeLuca
To: All House members
Subject: Veterans Memorial Markers, HB 181 of 2011

At the request of the Allegheny County Department of Veterans Services, I will be re-introducing HB 181 of 2011-2012 which amends the Second Class County Code.

This legislation will benefit the families of deceased veterans. Specifically, the bill will limit fees that cemeteries can charge for foundations for markers commemorating deceased veterans to $250.00.

Current law has no limit on what cemeteries can charge for the foundation, and as a result, some cemeteries have charged fees well in excess of what costs they could possibly be incurring. As a result, some families of veterans are being overcharged and even some veterans’ graves are not being identified.

Simply stated, this is unfair to those who have served our country, and their survivors. In addition, $250.00 will more than adequately cover the costs associated with the foundation.

Introduced as HB366
