Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 14, 2024 02:01 PM
From: Senator Lisa M. Boscola and Sen. Devlin J. Robinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Designating April 2024 as Pennsylvania Community College Month

We plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of April, 2024 as “Pennsylvania Community College Month.”

Pennsylvania is home to 15 public community colleges across 86 campus locations that serve over 245,000 students. In the past year, Pennsylvania’s community colleges have created 83 new programs educating students in a variety of wide-ranging and in-demand fields such as emergency services, health care, and technology.

Pennsylvania’s community colleges play an indispensable role in the Commonwealth’s system of higher education by providing accessible and affordable post-secondary education, workforce training, and dual enrollment opportunities for students from all stages and walks of life. Pennsylvania’s community colleges save students tens of thousands of dollars and have opened doors for underrepresented and minority groups, who make up about 42% of the Pennsylvania community college student body, as well as countless first-generation and non-traditional college graduates. The community colleges have served the people of Pennsylvania for over 60 years in these capacities, and they continue to work to better meet the needs of their students and the needs of Pennsylvania employers.

We hope that you will join us, in our role as Co-Chairs of the Community College Caucus, in recognizing the outstanding contributions Pennsylvania’s community colleges have made to students, businesses, and the Commonwealth as a whole by co-sponsoring this resolution.
