Subject: | Natural Hair Braiders Exemption |
For centuries, natural hair braiding has been a common place for African American women and men. Techniques have been passed down from generation to generation and do not require formal training. In some states, aspiring braiders face licensing laws that force braiders to spend substantial time and money on classroom training, often covering skills unrelated to braiding. Natural hair braiding is different from cosmetology. More than 33 states have completely exempted hair braiders. To recognize natural hair braiding as a safe, natural, cultural practice, distinct from hairdressing and barbering, I will be introducing legislation to exempt braiders from having to obtain a cosmetology license and get back to what’s important, providing for their families.
