Subject: Raising the Age to Purchase a Semi-Automatic Assault Rifle to 21
 
Despite a lengthy history of violence and concerns from neighbors, Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old killer of 17 individuals at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, was able to legally purchase a semi-automatic assault rifle and ammunition.  Not old enough to buy alcohol, but old enough to buy a deadly weapon, Cruz committed one of the deadliest school shootings in America.
 
This is unacceptable – we cannot continue to allow children to purchase weapons with such firepower.  My legislation would address this by prohibiting anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing a semi-automatic assault rifle capable of holding more than five rounds of ammunition.
 
As legislators, grandparents, parents, and siblings, we have stood idly by long enough.  Please join me in supporting this legislation to protect our constituents and their loved ones from senseless, preventable gun violence.
