MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 8, 2020 03:52 PM
From: Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill and Sen. Doug Mastriano, Sen. Cris Dush
To: All Senate members
Subject: Veteran Recognition Days

In the near future we will reintroduce Senate Bill 532 to create special days of observance to recognize the bravery, sacrifices and contributions of our United States Armed Forces veterans and allies who served in the First Gulf War, the Second Gulf War, and the war in Afghanistan. These special observances will join existing Commonwealth recognitions previously awarded to our veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Lest we forget:

Our Armed Forces have engaged in combat in three major conflicts since the Vietnam War: First Gulf War / Operation Desert Storm from January 16, 1991 to March 6, 1991; Second Gulf War / Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 19, 2003 to December 18, 2011; and the Afghanistan War / Operation Enduring Freedom from 2001 to December 28, 2014.

Our country asked these veterans to liberate Kuwait from Iraq’s occupation during the First Gulf War, remove the threat of Saddam Hussein’s forces to international peace and security during the second Gulf War, bring to justice those responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks, and eliminate terrorist cells and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

In these wars more than 2.5 million Americans have served and more than 6,000 have given their lives, including 324 of our fellow Pennsylvanians.

This legislation designates March 6 of each year as “Persian Gulf War Veterans Day and October 7 of each year as “Global War on Terrorism Veterans Day” and encourages all public schools and educational institutions to observe these special days by conducting exercises recognizing the contributions and sacrifices made by these veterans.

This legislation encourages, not mandates, our schools to observe these days which honor our veterans of these wars.

Please join us in honoring our fine men and women who served their country during these times of war.
