Subject: COSPONSOR MEMO – Background Checks for School Board Candidates

COSPONSOR MEMO – Background Checks for School Board Candidates

Dear Colleagues –

In the near future, I will introduce legislation requiring candidates for School Board to obtain the same background check / clearance required for individuals volunteering with children.

As you are likely aware, individuals who work or volunteer with children must obtain a child-abuse clearance under Pennsylvania law.  Details around this requirement can be found on the Department of Human Services website at the following link:
https://www.dhs.pa.gov/KeepKidsSafe/Clearances/Pages/default.aspx

With that in mind, there is no similar requirement for members of local school boards.  Under this proposal, candidates for school board would be required to submit a clearance along with their candidate affidavit, petitions, and statement of financial interest to the County during the filing period.

I would appreciate your support of this initiative.
