Subject: | Creating Dedicated Elk Tags for Disabled Veterans |
Our veterans have sacrificed greatly, giving their time, talents, bravery and often, their health, in service to our nation. One small way we honor disabled veterans in the Commonwealth is by providing them with a free annual hunting license. As an additional token of appreciation for their service, I will soon introduce legislation to establish a separate elk hunting license drawing each year for veterans with a 100-percent service-connected disability. My bill would earmark one bull and one cow elk tag for this dedicated drawing. There would be no cost for the tags to the veterans selected through this drawing. The idea for this legislation came from a constituent in Cresson, Cambria County, who is a disabled veteran and avid outdoorsman. A passionate hunter, he has entered the elk drawing for 12 consecutive years and never been selected. With the extremely competitive nature of Pennsylvania’s drawings, earmarking two elk tags per year for these veterans is a way of giving them improved odds they will have the chance to do something they love. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation to offer our disabled veterans, who have given so much, a better chance at this special way to enjoy the Pennsylvania wilds. |
