MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 10, 2021 02:26 PM
From: Representative Christopher M. Rabb
To: All House members
Subject: Requiring Background Checks for Political Candidates

You can’t apply for a job with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania without completing a criminal background check. Yet, state lawmakers can hire and supervise staff without going through this process themselves.

Simply put, we should require that political candidates complete criminal background clearances when filing their nomination petitions and affidavits, just as all other job applicants do who interact with vulnerable populations including minors, seniors and those with intellectual disabilities.

My legislation would amend the PA election code by adding a new section requiring this of all candidates running for elective office across our commonwealth.

Please join me in supporting this bill to increase transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

Introduced as HB1771
