Subject: | Price Increase Notification to Consumers during a Declared Disaster Emergency |
Consumers have a right to know why prices increase, especially in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic when many face financial challenges. Often, businesses are forced to raise prices through no fault of their own. Regardless, they should notify their customers to assure fairness and transparency of pricing. This is especially apt when prices rise significantly. I plan to introduce legislation to require businesses to notify consumers when prices for goods and services increase 10% or more during a declared disaster emergency. Notification must be displayed with the item, in a conspicuous manner, displaying the pre-pandemic price, the current price, and the percentage of increase. If the increase is beyond the control of the business, they may display the reason for the increase, if they choose. Fairness in pricing is what consumers deserve and should expect. I hope you will join me in supporting Pennsylvania consumers by co-sponsoring this legislation. |
