MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 30, 2019 04:51 PM
From: Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Increased Maximum Weight Limit for Electric-Powered Trucks

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that will increase the maximum allowable gross weight for commercial vehicles powered by electric battery power from 80,000 pounds to 82,000 pounds.

Last session, my legislation was passed into law as Act 31 of 2017 which raised the weight for natural gas vehicles. The FAST Act, passed by Congress in 2015, raised the weight limit for natural gas and electric battery powered tractor trailers to 82,000 pounds, and allowed states the ability to raise the weight on interstates.

Electric battery powered vehicles, similar to those powered by natural gas, weigh more due to heavier equipment required to power the truck. Heavy duty electric tractor trailers that run at full weight capacity weigh closer to 82,000 pounds simply due to the weight of the necessary equipment needed to make the engine and system work.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.
