Subject: | Loaded Firearms in Vehicles |
In June of 2017, recent high school graduate Bianca Nikol Roberson, a young woman with a bright future ahead of her, was fatally shot during a road rage incident. She was preparing to study at Jacksonville University. Bianca was described by those who knew her as “vibrant” and “energized.” She was murdered by another driver on the road that day who had a loaded gun sitting on the vehicle seat next to him. On March 22, 2019, Shaquille Mack, a 25-year-old father of three, was shot and killed in front of his three children after a confrontation with another driver during an apparent road-rage incident. The murder of Shaquille alone was horrific, but for it to occur in front of his three children is unacceptable. Last session, I introduced Senate Bill 1264, which was drafted after speaking with Bianca’s mother. This proposal is reasonable and could prevent deaths such as those of Bianca and Shaquille. My legislation would amend Title 18 to make it clear that no loaded firearm shall be carried in a vehicle. Under this legislation, a first offense would be a third degree misdemeanor, a second or subsequent offense would be a first degree misdemeanor. Representative Comitta is offering similar legislation in the House. Please join me in sponsoring this sensible legislation. |
