Subject: | Flexible Instructional Days |
In the near future, I plan to re-introduce House Bill 2690 of last session that codifies a three-year pilot program that provides Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs) to school entities. Currently, the PA Department of Education (PDE) authorizes school entities to use a maximum number of FIDs in a school year. During a FID, students do not physically attend school, but instead receive assignments at home from their teachers, who upload lessons online. FIDs allow the canceled school days to be counted toward the 180 days of instruction currently required under law—providing greater flexibility to school entities, especially during inclement weather—while ensuring students continue to learn. The three-year pilot program expired at the end of the most recent school year. Because of the overwhelming support from constituents and school districts about the successes of FIDs, my legislation permanently codifies the FIDs program into law. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation to provide greater flexibility to our schools. |
