Subject: | Full Day Career Co-Op Option for High School Students |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would allow a high school senior in the 2020 -2021 school year to do a full day career co-op rather than a half day. Currently a student can go to school for a half day and then go to a job such as HVAC, welding, electrician, auto body repair, etc. for a half day. The student receives credit for the half day work experience. My legislation recognizes that online school is not that effective for many students. Rather than floundering for a half day by taking required electives that may not benefit some students, they could instead work full-time and receive high school credit. For example, a student may elect to opt out of online art class, online gym class and online music/band but during those three periods they would be working as a diesel mechanic or carpenter. It would be a more suitable education and experience for some students. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
