Subject: Haley’s Law – Making Schools Safer for Students with Epilepsy

No parent should be worried about their child’s safety while they are at school. Unfortunately, this is a reality for parents like my constituent, Victoria, whose 5 year-old daughter Haley has epilepsy and is at risk of having a seizure during school hours. If schools and teachers are not able to effectively plan for the possibility a student has a seizure, it could become a traumatic experience for the student, their classmates, and their teacher.

For this reason, I am introducing legislation named for Haley that would establish procedures by which parents could give a school a physician-approved seizure management and treatment plan. At the same time, Haley’s Law would also connect teachers and other school employees with accessible, informative online training on seizure recognition and basic first aid.

Establishing statewide access to treatment plans and training will increase both student safety and awareness of seizure disorders like epilepsy in a way that empowers, rather than hinders, our hardworking teachers and nurses. Please join me in co-sponsoring this measure to ensure concerned families across Pennsylvania have the peace of mind they deserve. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jessica Luce in my Harrisburg office at (717) 772-4511 or via email at jluce@pahouse.net.
