Subject: | Reducing Barriers for Junior Firefighters |
I am preparing to introduce legislation to amend the Child Labor Act to eliminate the requirement that Junior Firefighters complete DCNR training before they can engage in firefighting activities. The DCNR trainings relate to fighting wild fires. These trainings are superfluous for most Junior Firefighters, and they have represented a barrier to getting young people involved with volunteer fire companies. My legislation would simply remove this requirement. Junior Firefighters would still have to complete training with the State Fire Commissioner, and they would still be subject to all the other current requirements (supervision, hours and age restrictions, equipment restrictions, etc.). If the training requirement is removed, any volunteer fire company could still voluntarily require the DCNR training for Junior Firefighters if they determine the training is relevant. I hope you will join me by cosponsoring this legislation. |
