MEMORANDUM

Subject: Cleaning Green in Schools

Did you know that the use of certain cleaning supplies can trigger asthma, which is the leading chronic disease in children?

Each day, parents in our Commonwealth entrust the health and safety of their children entering school buildings to our local school officials. Many traditional cleaning products used daily by school janitorial staff contain chemicals that can contribute to poor indoor air quality, trigger asthma and other respiratory illnesses, and contribute to long-term health problems.

Fortunately, there are cleaning supplies now available that are less toxic and more environmentally-friendly. These products are widely available and are frequently more cost-effective than traditional cleaning supplies. As such, ten states and Washington, D.C. require green cleaning products in schools.

My legislation would require school districts in the Commonwealth to establish policies for the procurement and use of green cleaning products in schools.

Please join me in making sure our school buildings are the safe and healthy learning environments that our children deserve.
