Subject: | Deducting Property Taxes from Eligibility Income for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program |
The Property Tax/Rent Rebate (PTRR) Program is one of the most valuable property tax relief options available to Pennsylvanians, helping more than half a million seniors and people with disabilities afford their property taxes and stay in their homes each year. Despite this, it has been 13 years since the last time eligibility income for the program was increased, in 2006. But even as the eligibility guidelines for the PTRR remain unchanged, property taxes have continued to increase throughout Pennsylvania. Many of our district offices have encountered constituents who have found themselves just beyond the point of qualifying for the program because of their income, even by a small amount. To help those property owners who narrowly miss out on qualifying for the PTRR, I plan to introduce legislation that would reduce eligibility income for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program by the amount of property taxes paid by an applicant. This would allow more Pennsylvanians to qualify for this important rebate program or receive a higher rebate amount. I hope that you will join me in providing property tax relief for many of our residents by cosponsoring this legislation. |
