Subject: | Resolution Honoring the 100th Anniversary of the Julia Ward Howe Academics Plus Elementary School |
I am requesting colleagues in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to join with me in honoring the 100th Anniversary of the Julia Ward Howe Academics Plus Elementary School in Philadelphia. The school is a K-5 institution that strives – and succeeds – in graduating children to the next level of their education fully prepared to succeed. The school is named after Julia Ward Howe, author, poet and suffragette, who helped lead the nation in both the abolition of slavery and in winning the vote for women. Many remember her for her stirring poem that became the stirring ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic.’ The school, led by its principal, Mrs. Doaquin R. Jessup and by Superintendent of the Philadelphia School District, Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., and guided by its thousands of alumni through the efforts of Joan Rosenberg Hartman and Diane Morgan, has received well-deserved honors over the years for its academic rigor. The school succeeds because of the combined efforts of the children, who strive to excel, of their parents who are partners in the effort, of the schools administrators, teachers, school professionals and paraprofessionals – each of whom plays an vital part in the education process. Julia Ward Howe’s descendants will be present on June 7th to take part in celebration of the school named for her and of the woman herself who inspired and inspires us still. Please contact Helen Norton at hnorton@pahouse.net should you have any further questions regarding this resolution. |
