Subject: | Acquired Brain Injury Disclosure |
In recent years, brain injuries have received a lot of attention due to a greater awareness and concern about the effects they have on an individual. These injuries can be very devastating physically, emotionally, and financially to patients and their families as they search for resources and support for treatment and rehabilitation. For this reason, I am introducing legislation which would require insurance companies to disclose upon written request from an enrollee or potential enrollee whether or not certain health care services, which are specifically listed in the legislation, relating to an acquired brain injury are covered under their health insurance policies. An acquired brain injury is defined as a traumatic or non-traumatic injury to the brain, but does not include brain injuries which are inherited, congenital, or degenerative in nature. Before one purchases health insurance and even after that purchase has been made, this disclosure will assist individuals, families, and employers in making informed decisions about their insurance coverage. If you have any questions concerning this legislation, please contact my office at 787-6886. |
