Subject: | Prohibiting Scientific Testing on Animals |
In the near future I plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit scientific experiments on live domestic cats or dogs within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s existing animal cruelty statute exempts medical research facilities, so long as they meet a short list of regulations deeming their facilities lawful. Our domestic friends, dogs and cats are tortured in research, and are exposed to a diverse array of experiments used to test the safety of drugs, medical devices and pesticides such as weed killer, insect repellent, DEET and rat poison. Testing aims to determine how a substance, ingredient or device will affect human health. Dogs and cats used for testing are fed harmful substances like weed killer, botox, new medicine under development on a daily basis for months and observed for harmful effects. Many of these tests involve painful and deadly procedures that push the animals to unimaginable never-ending pain that even a human being cannot endure. Subjecting our domestic companions to undergo pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm has no place in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Please join me in this important legislation. |
