MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 14, 2021 10:41 AM
From: Senator Lisa M. Boscola
To: All Senate members
Subject: Medical Release of Inmates

I plan to introduce legislation which would provide medical release for inmates under the Department of Corrections. Using parameters established by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, inmates would have to meet specific parameters – including reaching a certain age, having spent a certain length of time incarcerated by a sentence, conviction of the inmate, and experiencing chronic or serious medical conditions. My goal would be to provide inmates meeting these specific requirements with automatic eligibility for release, unless disapproved by the department of corrections.

While I have no disillusions about the crimes committed by individuals serving a sentence in prison, I feel that a certain population of inmates that meet specific requirements should have the opportunity to be released, and not drive up costs due to medical care provided by the department of corrections. I fully intend to work with interested parties on finding agreement to this matter, and introduce a bill which would provide this opportunity to have elderly inmates released, and at the same time contain or decrease costs on medical care for them as they continue to age.
