Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 10, 2024 10:46 AM
From: Senator Christine M. Tartaglione and Sen. Lisa Baker
To: All Senate members
Subject: National Wear Red Day

In the near future, we intend to introduce a resolution recognizing Friday, February 2, 2024, as “National Wear Red Day” in Pennsylvania with the intent of raising awareness for women’s heart health and improving the lives of women around the world.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. Nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented yet not enough women take the necessary steps to prevent, detect, and treat this disease. As a result, cardiovascular disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined while only 44% of women recognize cardiovascular disease as the greatest threat to their health.

Women’s heart disease awareness has increased in recent years but a gap still exists among the demographics of minorities and younger women. By recognizing National Wear Red Day in the Commonwealth, we can increase public awareness of cardiovascular disease and the risks it poses to all women.

The AHA’s Go Red for Women movement and National Wear Red Day encourages women to be open and knowledgeable about their heart health. Specifically, women should be aware of the following five factors that most significantly impact cardiovascular function:

  • Total Cholesterol
  • HDL (good) Cholesterol
  • Blood Pressure
  • Blood Sugar
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)

Please join us in sponsoring this important resolution and urging all Pennsylvanians to show their support for women in the fight against heart disease and stroke by wearing red on February 2nd.
