Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 3, 2023 12:22 PM
From: Senator Rosemary M. Brown
To: All Senate members
Subject: Community Colleges Academic Year

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which would amend the Public-School Code to allow community colleges to establish their own academic year.

Currently under section 1901-A, the academic school year for a community college is defined as having a set number of semesters, trimesters, or quarters which correlates to a specific hour requirements under the Pennsylvania Code.

My legislation would allow a community college board of trustees to determine an academic year, which could be semesters, terms, quarters or other similar units.

Updating the definition would provide community colleges with greater creativity and flexibility to craft programs centered on student needs today. It also would solve a problem community colleges face in having their programs meet requirements for approval for purposes of receiving accreditation, licensure, and financial aid.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation to help community colleges and their students.  If you have questions regarding this legislation, please reach out to Christine Zubeck in my office at 717-787-6123 or czubeck@pasen.gov.
