| Subject: | Licensing Updates of Professional Engineers |
| I plan to introduce legislation amending the Engineer's Registration Act that removes an existing barrier to becoming a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania and making necessary updates to be more consistent with the national model law. The Pennsylvania law contains a provision making the licensing process unnecessarily difficult for some applicants. Currently, in order for an applicant to be granted licensure as a professional engineer, the applicant must hold an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate and show proof of four or more years of experience in engineering work performed after the issuance of their EIT certificate. In some cases, an individual has the years of required experience and training, but it may have occurred prior to them obtaining their EIT certificate. My legislation will allow the qualified experience to apply regardless of whether it was earned before or after the EIT certificate was granted. Similar bills have previously passed both the House and Senate licensure committees with support from the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers.
