Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 3, 2022 12:35 PM
From: Senator John R. Gordner
To: All Senate members
Subject: Privacy of Genetic Information

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that establishes the Genetic Information Privacy Act.  It is patterned after legislation passed in Arizona and Utah.

The bill is intended to protect citizens’ genetic information from being unknowingly shared by direct-to-consumer testing companies.  Provisions include:
  • Prohibiting disclosure of genetic data to certain persons
  • Requiring consent for certain collection of data
  • Allowing the consumer to access and delete the consumer’s genetic data, and
  • Requiring consumer notice regarding privacy rights and the collection and use of genetic data.
These consumer protections are supported by multiple entities, including Ancestry.com.

It is essential for us to take these steps to protect the genetic information of all Pennsylvania residents.  Please join me in supporting this important legislation.

Introduced as SB1291
