Subject: Assault on a Media Professional
 
Research has shown that a robust, local, professional news media lowers corruption rates, safeguards free speech, and can bring attention to necessary changes in government. Yet our media professionals are increasingly under threat for doing their job, subjected to assaults and mistreatment, and discouraged from entering and remaining in the profession.

This legislation creates the offense of “assault on a media professional” which will be graded as a misdemeanor of the first degree for anyone who commits a simple assault of a media professional who is engaged in their professional duty. I hope you will join me in ensuring these hardworking professionals receive the protection they deserve.
