Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 19, 2018 01:13 PM
From: Senator John R. Gordner
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution recognizing the week of January 20-26, 2019, as " Nurse Anesthetists' Week" in Pennsylvania

I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of January 20-26, 2019, as "Nurse Anesthetists' Week" in Pennsylvania.

Nurse anesthetists were the first professional group to provide anesthesia in the U.S. and are the oldest recognized group of advanced practice registered nurse specialist. CRNAs have been administering anesthesia for about 150 years. They are capable of providing local, inhalation, intravenous or other anesthetics to induce total or partial loss of sensation or consciousness in patients for surgery, deliveries, or other medical and dental procedures.

CRNA training is extremely rigorous. They must complete a graduate-level educational program in a nationally accredited program of nurse anesthesia, complete 2,500 clinical hours, pass a national certifying examination. They must also recertify every four years by obtaining at least 40 hours of CE credits and meeting advanced practice requirements.

There are more than 3,000 CRNAs and students in PA. There are also 12 CRNA programs in the state.

Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution.
