MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 22, 2015 10:55 AM
From: Senator Guy Reschenthaler
To: All Senate members
Subject: Urging Congress to Support the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution which would urge the Congress of the United States to support HR 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act.

Nearly 10 million Americans have a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Currently, many of those suffering mental illness end up in the criminal justice system or enduring homelessness because of insufficient mental health programs and policies.

The Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Representative Tim Murphy, 18th District of Pennsylvania, who holds a Ph.D. in Psychology, reviewed the country’s mental health system beginning January 2013 to determine why so many who need care are denied access to treatment. This investigation included public forums, hearings with expert witnesses, and document and budget reviews. HR 2646 works to address the shortcomings discovered during this investigation.

If enacted, HR 2646 would work to fix the nation’s mental health system and help the millions of Americans in need of care who go without treatment. With improved treatment and programs, our nation would support those with mental illness and enable them to lead full, productive lives.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
