Subject: | Resolution – Designating September 25, 2015 as Dr. George W. Fairweather Day |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating September 25, 2015 as “Dr. George W. Fairweather Day” in Pennsylvania. Dr. Fairweather, who conducted research in the mental health field that led to the Patients’ Rights Movement in psychiatry, shared his work through his book, “Community Life for the Mentally Ill: An Alternative to Institutional Care.” Dr. Fairweather developed the Fairweather Lodge Program to provide full support and supervision to persons with chronic mental illness and to assist them with community living-skills development. Many organizations across the Commonwealth are modeled after this program, and there are more than 100 Fairweather Lodges in the nation. I am proud to have a one of these lodges, New Vision’s Specialized Community Residence, located in my district. This residence provides full support and supervision to adults with chronic mental illness and it assists them with community living-skills development. It is my honor to assist them in receiving Senate recognition for their important work. The House recently adopted a similar resolution for the recognition of Dr. Fairweather. Please join me in honoring Dr. Fairweather and the Fairweather Lodge Programs across Pennsylvania, which continue his monumental work in psychology, by designating September 25, 2015 as “Dr. George W. Fairweather Day.” |
