Subject: | Memo #14 -- Resolution recognizing Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) for 50 years of care |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), also known as community health centers, for providing 50 years of quality primary care. Founded nationally in 1965, the first health center to open in Pennsylvania was in Pittsburgh in 1968. The centers provide primary medical, dental and behavioral health services to all individuals regardless of their income or access to insurance. Despite only being located in communities that lack access to primary care or have significant poverty rates, more than 250 community health centers provide primary care to more than 700,000 Pennsylvanians in 49 counties. Each community health center is a non-profit organization directed by its community majority-based board of directors to be reflective of the community and patients they serve. |
