| Subject: | Recognizing April 15, 2024 as “Jim Leyland Day” in Pennsylvania |
| I am proud to represent Mr. Jim Leyland in the House of Representatives. His accomplishments in Major League Baseball, including his stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates, is notable and worthy of celebration and recognition. His career started in 1963 when he started with the Detroit Tigers. He then moved to minor league coaching and managing with Detroit, winning two American Associations divisions (1979, 1981). In 1982, he became third base coach with the Chicago White Sox. On Nov. 20, 1985, he was named the 33rd manager in Pittsburgh Pirates history and was there from the 1986 season to 1996. While in Pittsburgh, he was twice named Manager of the Year (1990, 1992) and finished runner-up in 1988 and 1991. Under Leyland, the Pirates captured the National League Eastern Division title and went to the National League Championship Series in three straight seasons – 1990, 1992 and 1992. In 1997, he was hired to manage the Florida Marlins and took them to the franchise’s first World Series that year, where they defeated the Cleveland Indians. He was with the Colorado Rockies for the 1999 season when he reached his 1,000th win on April 15. He was then hired as the new Tigers manager, and in 2006, led them to the World Series. After that season, he was recognized for the third time in his career as Manager of the Year. In 2011, he reached his 1,500th win, again on April 15. He went on to lead the Tigers to the World series. He is one of eleven managers to lead three different teams to the postseason. With the 2006 American League Championship Series, he became the seventh manager in history to win pennants in both the National and American leagues. He managed the United States National Team at the 2017 World Baseball Classic, leading the team to its first gold medal finish -- making him the only manager to win a World Series and a World baseball Classic title. On May 30, 2017, Leyland was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in Detroit. On Dec. 3, 2023, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024. He and his wife Katie live in Thornburg where they raised two children: Patrick and Kellie. Patrick was drafted by the Tigers and eventually played in the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles organizations.
