MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 20, 2024 02:52 PM
From: Representative Jim Marshall
To: All House members
Subject: Flashing Green Lights_ Hwy Construction/Maintenance Veh.

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to allow highway construction and maintenance vehicles to be equipped with flashing or revolving green lights.

In many weather conditions, it can be difficult for drivers to see the flashing yellow lights that are currently on construction and maintenance vehicles in Pennsylvania. My legislation seeks to protect the drivers of motor vehicles and of construction and maintenance vehicles by allowing for a more visible green light to be equipped. Proponents argue that green is a color that draws the eye of an individual more-so than yellow, and by equipping a flashing or revolving green light to construction and maintenance vehicles, it would decrease the potential for accidents and injury.

This legislation would apply to any municipality or department owned motor vehicle that is used for the purpose of maintenance, construction, or repair of a highway or bridge. Vehicles included would be snowplows, dump trucks, street sweepers, mowers, sign and signal maintenance trucks, and many more. Similar legislation has been passed in Ohio and has been used effectively by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Please consider joining me as a cosponsor of this legislation, to protect motorists in PA.
