Subject: A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING APRIL 6TH -12TH AS THE "WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD" IN PENNSYLVANIA

 Dear Colleagues,

I am planning to re-introduce legislation recognizing the week of April 6th-12th as the "Week of the Young Child" in Pennsylvania. The "Week of the Young Child" has been celebrated nationally since its inception in 1971, emphasizing the foundational role of early learning in the growth and development of young children. This week-long observance aims to draw public attention to the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the valuable early childhood programs and services that address these needs.

Historically, the concept of early childhood education dates to the 1700s, gaining prominence with the contributions of philosophers like John Amos Comenius, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau. The establishment of the kindergarten program in 1837 by Friedrich Froebel and the subsequent advancements by Maria Montessori further underscored the importance of educating children's senses before their intellect. Post-World War II, the significance of early childhood education as a critical first step in a child's educational journey was universally acknowledged.

In Pennsylvania, recognizing this week officially will reinforce our commitment to ensuring that all young children and their families have access to high-quality early education and care. This resolution will also support and acknowledge the dedicated individuals, programs, and policies committed to providing exceptional early childhood education.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to affirm our collective commitment to the youngest members of our Commonwealth. Together we can make a significant investment in the future of our children, our communities, and our state.

Thank you for considering this important initiative.
