MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 25, 2024 03:42 PM
From: Representative Michael Stender
To: All House members
Subject: Fire & EMS Grant Program Reauthorization 2024

As you may know the Fire & EMS Grant Program was reauthorized back in June of 2020 under Act 91 which extended its sunset date to June 30, 2024. With the upcoming expiration date drawing near I will soon be introducing a bill that extends the sunset date to June 30, 2028.

It is my hope that through this legislation we will also be able to bring attention to the struggles of our Fire & EMS systems across the Commonwealth as fire companies suffer constant staffing issues, and ambulance services continue to close down each year. With the recent pledge by Governor Shapiro to double the amount of funding for Fire & EMS, bringing the Grant Program to the forefront could see additional funding provided to these critical services at a time when many are severely underfunded and barely making ends meet while trying to function at full capacity.

With that in mind, we are currently facing a major emergency services issue across the entire Commonwealth, and it is my hope that through this critical legislation such as this we may continue to provide support and sustainability to our Fire & EMS communities so that they may continue their work to keep our Commonwealth safe.

Please join me in cosponsoring this critical legislation for the continued success of our Fire & EMS communities.

Introduced as HB2091
