Subject: Resolution to Incorporate Ethics into STEM Education Grants
 

Cyber-bullying, predatory phishing, scamming our seniors, data breaches, unlawful surveillance, espionage. These are just a few of the ways that important and powerful technological innovation can be maliciously abused right this very moment by a savvy person from their laptop. We must continue to invest in STEM education in our schools to equip our young people with the skills they need to innovate, but we also bear a responsibility to offer them a framework to assist them and determine not if they can do something, but if they should.

This resolution encourages the extension of the PAsmart grant which aims to address the multi-faceted challenges emerging from STEM innovation by fostering ethical awareness and responsible decision-making among students. Promoting ethics education alongside STEM programming in school districts is a vital step to harness the full potential of technological advancement, while mitigating risks.

By incorporating ethics classes into STEM curricula, we can equip the next generation of innovators with frameworks necessary to navigate complex ethical dilemmas associated with our rapidly advancing capabilities. This not only ensures that technological progress is driven by responsible stewardship, but also enhances inclusivity and diversity in STEM fields.

The grant will support the development and implementation of ethics courses, training for educators, and the creation of resources that align with STEM education. By nurturing a generation of ethical STEM professionals, we can better safeguard against potential pitfalls and maximize the positive impact of STEM innovation on society.
 
Our future leaders are going to do amazing things because we’re going to need them to. We must continue to invest in their capacity to do good, not just to do. Please support this resolution.
