MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 14, 2023 09:56 AM
From: Representative Stephen Kinsey and Rep. Maureen E. Madden
To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing November 15, 2023, as “Ohtahara Syndrome Awareness Day”

Ohtahara syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that causes infants to have violent seizures within the first three months of life. These seizures can be fatal, leaving many children to pass away before the age of two. For those that survive, many are left with the scars of this disease in the form of physical and cognitive disabilities. There is no cure, as the cause of Ohtahara has not been determined, and treatment regularly is ineffective in controlling seizures. No family should have to go through this experience.

It is for this reason that we intend to introduce a resolution to honor the families impacted by Ohtahara syndrome by commemorating November 15, 2023, as “Ohtahara Syndrome Awareness Day.” Recognizing this day as a day of awareness will honor the thousands of children who have died by this disease and will reinforce our belief that we can put an end to it; while a cure has not been identified, we believe one is out there and this resolution will affirm Pennsylvania’s commitment to finding that cure.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this legislation. Together, let us show our support and bring visibility to Ohtahara syndrome.
