Subject: | Recognizing “Diabetes Awareness Month in Pennsylvania” |
We all know someone who is impacted by diabetes, a potentially life-threatening illness that occurs when the body is unable to process or create insulin, as one in three Pennsylvanians are at risk of developing this disease. Whether they are a family member, a friend, or a neighbor, diabetes has affected our communities in one way or another. To any one of the 34 million people across the U.S. with diabetes—and to the 88 million people diagnosed with prediabetes—it is an understatement to say diabetes can be detrimental. Kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes and even lower-limb amputations are a real possibility for individuals with this chronic disease. To honor those impacted by diabetes, we intend to introduce a resolution commemorating November 2023 as “Diabetes Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.” Diabetes is a leading cause of death in our state and is the most expensive chronic condition in our nation, and it is time we recognize the fight many are facing. By recognizing “Diabetes Awareness Month in Pennsylvania,” we bring to light the reality that so many are facing and stand in solidarity with them. We believe everyone should have access to quality health care, and believe that the diabetes epidemic can be beaten by improving coverage and affordability of health services. Please join us in co-sponsoring this legislation, and let us encourage everyone to be a part of the effort to fight and change the trajectory of this illness. |
