Subject: Insurance Coverage for Doula Services

Doulas are trained individuals who provide emotional and physical support to women throughout the pregnancy experience. From assisting in labor to accompanying women to healthcare appointments and connecting them with the resources they need, doula services are reported to be one of the most effective evidenced-based practices for labor and delivery. However, due to a lack of awareness, cost and other barriers, only 6% of birthing mothers receive doula services.

It is for these reasons that I plan to introduce legislation to require the coverage of doula services by health insurance policies. Under this bill, doulas certified by the Pennsylvania Certification Board will be able to provide continuous support to women throughout the prenatal and perinatal periods of pregnancy.

Doulas are an incredible resource for women, but at a price tag on average of $1,500 per birth, this service is simply unaffordable to those who need it. By ensuring coverage, soon-to-be mothers will be supported in the best way possible as they bring a child into this world.

I believe in ensuring every resident of Pennsylvania has access to high quality, affordable healthcare. Please consider co-sponsoring this much-needed legislation.
