Subject: | Prohibiting Weapons in Public Parks |
On July 13, 2019, seven people were wounded in a mass shooting during a cookout at a city playground in West Philadelphia. Unfortunately, gun violence at recreation centers has continued. The year 2022 saw shootings in parks across Pennsylvania, including fatal shootings at parks in Reading and Philadelphia. While local officials have attempted to respond with increased police presence, the efforts of police and local officials are impaired by state law allowing guns in parks and recreation centers. To prevent tragedies like these, I am proposing legislation to prohibit firearms and other dangerous weapons in parks, recreation centers, and pools owned or operated by a political subdivision. This legislation mirrors current law regulating the possession of a firearm or other dangerous article in court facilities and on school property. I hope you will join me in sponsoring legislation that protects children, who are the primary users of publicly owned recreation centers, from gun violence. |
